Where is East of Medina ?

Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6938:

Ibn Umar reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying while he had turned his face towards the East: “Behold, turmoil would appear from this side, from where the horns of Satan would appear.”

Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6940:

Salim b. Abdullah reported on the authority of his father that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him), while turning his face towards the East, said: “The turmoil would appear from this side; verily, the turmoil would appear from this side; verily, the turmoil would appear from this side–the side where appear the horns of Satan.”

Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6942:

Ibn Umar reported: I heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying while pointing his hands towards the East: “The turmoil would appear from this side; verily, the turmoil would appear from this side (he repeated it thrice) where appear the horns of Satan.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 88, Number 212:

Narrated Salim’s father:

The Prophet stood up beside the pulpit (and pointed with his finger towards the East) and said, “Afflictions are there! Afflictions are there, from where the side of the head of Satan comes out,” or said, “..the side of the sun..” (i.e. the sun emerges from the East)

As one can read from these narrations,  the turmoil and the Horns of Satan, rises from the East. And as we all know, the Sun rises from the East.  One can thereby determine what place and direction the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم referred to by locating the direction of sunrise from the point of Medina.

Sunrise from Medina - 1

Sunrise from Medina - 2

Its clear that what is East of Medina is Central Arabia, and this is the Najd the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم pointed towards as the location of trials and from where the horns of Satan would arise.

If that wasn’t clear enough then here is another gift to the Wahhabis:

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 53, Number 336:

Narrated Abdullah:

The Prophet stood up and delivered a sermon, and pointing towards Aisha’s house (i.e. Eastwards), he said thrice, “Affliction (will appear from) here,” and, “from where the side of the Satan’s head comes out (i.e. from the East).”

Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6941:

Ibn Umar reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) came out from the house of Aisha and said: “It would be from this side (pointing to the East) that there would appear the height of unbelief, viz. where appear the horns of Satan.”

Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6939:

Ibn Umar reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) stood by the door (of the apartment of) gafsa and, pointing towards the East, he said: “The turmoil would appear from this side, viz. where the horns of Satan would appear,” and he uttered these words twice or thrice; and Ubaidullah in his narration said: the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) had been standing by the door of Aisha.

From the above narrations, it is clear that this East towards which the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم pointed towards was towards the direction of the house of Aisha رضي الله عنها. So one can essentially determine the direction with reference to the house.

As we see, the house of Aisha رضي الله عنها is towards the direction al-Baqi cemetery, which is towards the direction of Najd of Central Arabia, straight towards the capital, Riyadh.

In fact,  the following narrations even mention the tribes, narrowing down the exact location of the fitna of the East:

  • Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “The main source of disbelief is in the east. Pride and arrogance are characteristics of the owners of horses and camels, and those bedouins who are busy with their camels and pay no attention to Religion; while modesty and gentleness are the characteristics of the owners of sheep.”  [Sahih bukhari Book 54, Hadith 520]
  • Narrated Abi Mas’ud: The Prophet said, “From this side from the east, afflictions will appear. Rudeness and lack of mercy are characteristics of the rural bedouins who are busy with their camels and cows (and pay no attention to religion). Such are the tribes of Rabi’a and Mudar.”  [Sahih bukhari Book 56, Hadith 702]
  • Narrated Abu Masud: The Prophet pointed with his hand towards Yemen and said twice, “Faith is there,” and then pointed towards the East, and said, “Verily, sternness and mercilessness are the qualities of those who are busy with their camels and pay no attention to their religion, where the two sides of the head of Satan will appear,” namely, the tribes of Rabi’a and Mudar. [Sahih bukhari Book 63, Hadith 223]

These are tribes from the Najd of Central Arabia.  Also, not to forget the individual described to be the father of the Kharijites, was a Tamimi (i.e., from Banu Tamim, who are again from Central Arabia):

6534. Abu Salama related that Abu Sa’id said, “While the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was distributing [zakat], ‘Abdullah ibn Dhi’l-Khuwaysira at-Tamimi came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, be just!’ He said to him, ‘Woe to you! Who will be just if I am not just?’ ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab said, ‘Give me permission to cut off his head!’ He said, ‘Leave him. He has companions whose prayer will makes yours seem paltry and whose fasting makes your seem paltry. They will pass through the deen like the arrow passes through game. One looks at his arrowhead and there is nothing on it. Then he looks at the mount of its head and there is nothing on it. He will look at its shaft and there is nothing on it. Then he will look at its feathers and there will be nothing on them, for it has been too fast for excrement and blood. Their sign will be a black man, one of whose arms is like a woman’s breast, or a piece of meat palpitating. They will emerge when there are parties among the people.'”

Abu Sa’id said, “I testify that I heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I testify that ‘Ali fought them while I was with him. A man was brought with the description which the Prophet, , may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had given.” He said, “Revealed about him were the words, ‘Among them there are some who find fault with you concerning the zakat.’ (9:58)”

  1. Mash aa Allah brother you have posted very beneficial information. May Allah swt protect you and bless you. But please do not say that the horns of satan are wahabbis or salafis. Whoever is striving for the sake of Allah swt and following the teachings of Rasool saw is a Muslim or Mommin. What i realized in our Muslim community that we are just fighting with each other proving to be 100% perfect. We as human beings can’t be 100% perfect. Allah swt needs improvement from us not perfection. The more knowledge you have the more you become humble instead of becoming judgemental. Hanafis are saying wahabbis are kafir, wahabbis are saying hanafis are kafir, if every Muslim is kafir who will go to jannah among us. I think this is the greatest fitna that our Muslim community is experiencing now a days. We should end this our ulemas and people of knowledge can only do this. Please unite as one nation please. I have many people around me wahabbis amd as well as hanafis who are pious and humble believers. Do not generalize the whole community on one trait. Please unite the Ummah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW into one ummah, not into hanaf, wahabbi, maliki or hanbali. The world should know us by the name of Muhammadi i.e ummat of Muhammad saw. If my words really touched your heart please do reply me.

    1. Thank you for your comment.

I have to point out that it is the pious and righteous scholars themselves who have connected the hadith on the horns of satan to the Wahhabi movement.

If this movement would have done only good deeds they would not be subject of criticism. But it is because they are the ones who have came forth with new beliefs declaring Muslims as polytheists on account of which they have killed Muslims and continue to do so in addition to the various other crimes. And because many of them reject fundamental beliefs and foundations among Sunni Islam than it is obligatory for scholars that these matters are defended and false beliefs rejected in order to safeguard the religion. Being humble and doing a lot of worship alone does not suffice as a guarantee, as it is known from the hadith that it is a trait of the khawarij that they say a lot of good, read Quran a lot, do a lot of prayers and so forth and yet they are the worst of creatures on earth.

You also have to distinguish between a lay person who might be associated to this movement from a person who is a leader and responsible in spreading major false beliefs of this movement. Our attitude to both are not the same and we do not generalize. Similarly, there is a difference between our obligation as layman with regards to the movement from the obligation of a scholar. You are not obligated to argue with them. Instead you are obligated to know the correct beliefs on these matters when doubts come to you and strengthen your belief and the belief of those you are responsible for, while stay away from the leaders of this movement who spread these false beliefs and stay away from helping the spread of this movement.

Lastly i have not known of Hanafi scholars declaring the Wahhabi movement as kuffar.

      1. May Allah swt bless you and protect you. Brother my point is this that if someone is calling humanity towards Allah swt and Rasool Allah saw he is pious and on right path. I know there are some issues among the fiqhs which needs to be resolved to unite the Ummah. In Wahabism we have a lot of groups there are wahabbis or salafis who are militant, salafis who are just trying to take people towards the straight path. What is your opinion about Dr Zakir Naik or Mufti Menk Ismail?. I respect every scholar on this planet who are working day and night to call people towards Allah swt and Nabi saw it doesn’t matter whether he is a wahabbi, hanafi, Maliki or shaa’fi. Intentions should be pure of every Muslim before doing any good deed it should be for the sake of Allah swt Alone. Instead of saying each other anything we should research on from where ISIS came from or Daish these militants and extremist groups are destroying the image of Muslims. Mash aa Allah you are among the people of knowledge take a deep breath and think about ISIS or Daesh. Instead of fighting on little things with each other we should collectively think. I do not know how much you are aware about the illumanti or free masons society, these people are working day and night to attack islam and our youth to destroy us. We should collectively fight for big concerns like isis, free masons or groups like these. Our scholars and ulemas should unite to fight the unseen fitna of Ad-dajjal. May Allah protect all of us from the torment of the grave, from the torment of hell fire, from the trials of life and death, and from the false messiah dajjaal. May Allah protect you brother stay blessed and happy forever.
        Jazak Allah khair
        Barak Allah fee. 🙂

        1. Thank you for your comment.

“Brother my point is this that if someone is calling humanity towards Allah swt and Rasool Allah saw he is pious and on right path.”

Yes but when someone calls to false beliefs that is against the Quran, Sunnah and ijma then that is calling humanity away from Allah SWT & our Prophet peace be upon him.

“I know there are some issues among the fiqhs which needs to be resolved to unite the Ummah.”

This is where the confusion is. If it was just minor fiqh issues, then you are right. However when it is case of the most basic 1st principle of Islam i.e., tawhid, where the Wahhabi movement has labelled the Sunnis as Mushriks and similarly its case of difference in foundation of fiqh whereby the Salafi movement have rejected the basic foundations of Sunni fiqh and the Madhabs, and on top of that label Sunnis as sinful innovators who in their view are committing a sin worse than adultery and are on the path to hell. All this cannot be sidelined as just “some issues among fiqh”.

“In Wahabism we have a lot of groups there are wahabbis or salafis who are militant, salafis who are just trying to take people towards the straight path.”

Doesn’t matter what their intent is because they are not calling towards the straight path and that is why they are opposed.

“What is your opinion about Dr Zakir Naik or Mufti Menk Ismail?”

I don’t listen or follow them so i won’t comment on them much besides my general knowledge that i know both these figures have errors in fundamentals and so i wouldn’t rely on them for my religion.

“I respect every scholar on this planet who are working day and night to call people towards Allah swt and Nabi saw it doesn’t matter whether he is a wahabbi, hanafi, Maliki or shaa’fi.”

That is understandable and it is hard to blame one for that. But once you recognize the errors and major false beliefs someone propagates then it is also hard to ignore and pretend its all good and trust their opinion.

“Intentions should be pure of every Muslim before doing any good deed it should be for the sake of Allah swt Alone.”

That is true but not enough to qualify.

“Instead of saying each other anything we should research on from where ISIS came from or Daish these militants and extremist groups are destroying the image of Muslims.”

But Daesh are having pure intention and hardworking and giving up their life for the cause of Islam, so why criticize them ? Which hence comes to the point being made that it is because the false beliefs of neo-jihadi Salafis were not condemned as should be and as well on time and that because the general public not warned against that we see Daesh and Qaeda were able to get this successful. Because the false doctrines of this group were not addressed as much and people not aware of them, a lot of innocent Muslims as a result have fell into their trap and the Muslim world is facing a calamity of epic proportions.

          1. Will keep it brief and quick from the top of my head:

            – In Aqeeda, they propagate false beliefs with regard to Allah SWT that He can be located to a place, in a direction, with a body, in motion, with temporal attributes and so on, which are all by ijma rejected as false by Sunni Muslims, as well other deviant philosophical beliefs like the universe always existing along with Allah without a beginning and so on.

            – In Aqeeda, they have distorted the meaning of Tawhid and Iman and so there now is a whole range of takfiri movements from the old school takfiris who declared Muslims as apostates over issues like Tawasul and political takfiris who declare Muslims as apostates for committing what is actually only sinful or otherwise even permitted and recommended.

            – In Fiqh, the Salafi movement in particular have rejected the 4 Sunni Schools of Law which by ijma are on truth and to be followed and instead they operate outside these schools of law, and they have invented their own fifth school with new rules and principles and thereby brought down Islamic scholarship to a low level where people with very little to no knowledge can become Mufti and give fatwa as per their desires. So now in every part of the Muslim world, we have these reformists Salafis who split from the community and stay apart inventing new rulings and creating fitna among Muslims who have been following as per the four Sunni schools for ages. There are a plethora of Sunni practices which they have rejected and declared as Bidah and sinful and look down upon pious and practicing Muslims as sinful adulterers. Not forgetting of course, the spiritual consequences of rejecting so much aspects of the religion.

            – In Tasawuf as well, they have rejected the whole science although some have now started to pretend to adopt Tasawuf by just focusing around tasawuf of Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn al Qayyim. The consequences of emptying Islam of its deeper essence and preventing Muslims from perfecting their Iman and reaching higher stations of Ihsan have backfired against the Muslim community. And top of that they reject and mock the friends (awliya) of Allah that have passed away and played important role in Muslim communities throughout history of Islam.
