Wahhabism: Modern day Kharijism

Habib Aydarus bin Sumayt martyred while praying

Prominent cleric shot dead while praying in Yemen’s Hadhramaut

Unknown gunmen assassinated cleric Al Habib Aidroos Ben Abdullah bin Sumait, a prominent scholar and imam of Al-Mehdhar Mosque in his home in the city of Tarim in Hadhramaut, southern Yemen.

The gunmen pretended to be joining the cleric to read Quran, and after he allowed them in, they shot him as he performed his prayer, according to sources close to the deceased.

Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Obeid bin Daghr condemned the assassination, which he described as an attack on moderate thinking that rejects deviant ideas and rejects them socially.

He added that Bin Sumait was one of the moderate voices known for his honesty and morals.

The attack is the first of its kind in the city of Trim, which is renowned for its role in advocating tolerance, rejecting violence and advocacy for moderation.

It is especially alarming as the number of assassinations in southern Yemen has risen.

Aden has witnessed assassinations of imams and religious teachers.

The same province witnessed an intensive campaign to hunt down militants belonging to al-Qaeda, leading to the detection of the headquarters used by a terrorist group to launch assassinations in Hadhramaut and Aden during the month of September last year.

We have lost another of the men of Allah. On Friday 14th Jumada al-Akhirah 1439 / 2nd March 2018, Habib Aydarus bin Abdullah bin Sumayt was martyred in shocking circumstances in Tarim, Hadramawt. On that morning a man knocked on his door claiming that he was sick and asking Habib Aydarus to read verses of the Qur’an over him. After welcoming him in, Habib Aydarus said that he would pray Salat al-Duha and then come to him. The man then shot him and he died on his prayer mat in front of his wife.

His death is reminiscent of the death of Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab, who asked to die as a martyr in Madinah, and also of the death of Sayyiduna Uthman, who died in his own home. Who would have thought that Habib Aydarus would die as a martyr in his own home in Tarim? The Prophet ﷺ  also told us that the one who dies on Friday will be given the reward of a martyr and will be protected from the punishment of the grave.

Habib Aydarus was a spiritual guide and healer and was much loved by the people of Tarim. There was hardly a person in Tarim nor a visitor to the city who did not go to his house next to Masjid al-Mihdar in order for him to read over them or see to their needs. He had immense humility and would never turn anyone away. He was born in 1352 (1933) and for many years was the imam of Masjid al-Mihdar, one of the main and most historic mosques in Tarim. That morning he had prayed fajr in the mosque with the congregation, as was his custom. May Allah raise his rank and give ease to his family and loved ones.

Prophet Muhammed ﷺ on Takfiri Terrorists: “He is not of me”

gedt ipoumkhjhbjbk 1jmgfndgsf 1

From the highlighted part of the narrations above we can notice the characteristic of the people from whom the Prophet salatonmassenger has disassociated:

  • Rebellion & split from the Ummah. Which is a major trait of Takfiris. The name “Khawarij” comes from the root word  خرج that is used in this hadith.
  • Indiscriminate violence killing good and evil people alike to such extent that even the most pious are not free from their killing. Takfiris killing of scholars and pious of the Ummah are too numerous to mention here let alone their indiscriminate violence against the Ummah as a whole.
  • Violence against Non-Muslims who are under a covenant/pledge of security with Muslims. Another well known & distinct trait of Takfiri terrorists. The enormity of breaking covenants is such that in the widely reported authentic narration, the Prophet salatonmassenger said: “the asylum granted by any Muslim is to be secured by all the other Muslims, and whoever betrays a Muslim in this respect will incur the same (i.e. the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people, none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of worship will be accepted)” ( Sahih Bukhari), and in another narration the Prophet salatonmassenger counted the breaking of covenants and treachery to be one of the four signs of a hypocrite (Sahih Bukhari).

One can positively say from the basis of this narration that our Prophet salatonmassenger has disassociated himself from these Takfiri terrorists of today, the modern day Kharijites.

Ironically, the above hadith is often quoted by Takfiris themselves however they use it to attack others as “tribalist”. But just as the Prophet salatonmassenger described the Khawarij that they read but “will not go beyond their throats”, they do not have the acumen to see the hadith is against them.

Daesh cult reaffirms they are upon the Najdi Dawah

The modern day Khawarij cult “Daesh” in their latest propaganda magazine (i.e., Rumiyah Issue #10) once again clarifies and reaffirms about themselves that their cult was “established upon the same principles as the blessed Najdi da’wah state founded by the followers of the Mujaddid Imam Muhammed Ibn ‘Abdil-Wahhab“. It should leave no doubt for those still in denial.

Although they consider it a “blessed” Najdi dawa,  the Prophet on the contrary said about Najd:

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “O Allah bless us in our Sham! O Allah bless us in our Yemen.” They said: “And in our Najd” He said: “O Allah bless us in our Sham! O Allah bless us in our Yemen.” They said: “And in our Najd” He said: “Earthquakes are there, and tribulations are there.” Or he said: “The horn of Shaitan comes from there.” – [ Jami`at-Tirmidhi]

In addition, they also proudly claim to take their Islam from complete imbeciles like Abu Musab az-Zarqawi and his bandwagon. As one knows, Wahhabism has long mutated into various sects and groups in past 200 years. For a slightly more detailed look at the link between Najdi Wahhabism and Daesh as well as where they departed and differed, see: http://carnegieendowment.org/2016/02/18/kingdom-and-caliphate-duel-of-islamic-states-pub-62810

Moreover in this magazine, they once again make mass takfir of the Afghan Taliban. If even the Taliban are murtad to them then its a no brainier what their views regarding the rest of Muslims are.

Takfir of Asharis by the Wahhabi Movement

The text quoted is from the infamous book “ad-Durar us-Sanniyyah fil-Ajwibatil-Najdiyyah”, which is a compilation of Wahhabi history and thoughts by their scholar Ibn Qasim an-Najdi (d. 1973),

Here as highlighted,  the Asharis are being described as committing “shirk” and “worship of other than Allah” and that they are “Kafir”.

Shaykh Muhammed al-Yaqoubi on takfiri doctrines of Daesh

To add to this, Imam al-Thalabi (d. 427H) says in his tafsir for this verse (Quran 5:44):

فأما من يحكم ببعض ما أنزل اللّه من التوحيد [وترك] الشرك ثم لم يحكم بهما [فبين] ما أنزل اللّه من الشرائع لم يستوجب حكم هذه الآيات.

“As for those who judge by some of what Allah has revealed from Tawhid and (leaving) shirk (and) then he did not judge from what Allah has revealed from the Shariah (laws), (then) the judgement of this verse does not necessitate”

Boko Haram descends into in-fighting as reports emerge of deadly clashes between rival Islamist factions

Two leaders vie for power as followers argue over who is following ‘true jihad’

New reports have emerged on in-fighting between rival factions of the Boko Haram militant group, as the jihadists feel the pressure of a concerted Nigerian military push and the number of desertions continues to rise.

The apparent split in the group began last month when an Isis media wing announced Abu Musab al-Barnawi as the new leader of Boko Haram, which pledged allegiance to the Middle East insurgency in March last year.

But the previous leader, Abubakar Shekau, insists he is still in charge, and the AFP news agency quoted local sources saying deadly skirmishes have now broken out between supporters of either man.

Nigeria’s military has declined to comment on the development, but at least half a dozen Shekau supporters are reported to have been killed and more wounded in clashes across three villages in the Monguno area of Borno state.

Mele Kaka, who lives in the area, told AFP the Barnawi faction had launched the attacks in each case, on areas controlled by Shekau supporters.

After each attack, he said, the Barnawi fighters told villagers the other faction had “derailed from the true jihad” by killing innocent people and looting their property.

The Isis-supporting faction has previously rejected Shekau’s preferred strategy of suicide bombings in crowded areas. In comments shortly after he was named the new leader, Barnawi criticised his predecessor for “targeting the ordinary people”.

The Bloomberg news agency also carried reports of the skirmishes, which appear to have occurred late last week. News can take time to travel in Nigeria’s war-ravaged northeastern region, where up to 2.5 million people have been displaced from their homes and most basic infrastructure like telecommunications lines have been destroyed.

Ali Mohammed, a member of an army-supporting vigilante group based in Monguno, told Bloomberg around 18 Boko Haram fighters were understood to have surrendered to the army, along with their families, following the in-fighting.

“They are under custody of Monguno command and we believe the dual battle between Barnawi’s and Shekau’s camps may have compelled them to sneak out and surrender,” he said.

Despite all its recent setbacks, Boko Haram continues to pose a serious threat to the region.

Yesterday a Reuters reporter who rode along with the Nigerian army reported soldiers firing indiscriminately into the bush throughout the journey, because of a constant fear of ambush.

The army has reclaimed a number of key towns in Borno state since former military leader Muhammadu Buhari became president last year and the military moved its base of operations to the northeast city of Maiduguri.

But heavy rains have halted its advance towards the Sambisa forest, which the government describes as Boko Haram’s final bolthole, whose dirt roads are ill-suited to heavy tanks and artillery.

Food is scarce in the areas still controlled by Boko Haram and the group is reported to be low on other supplies and ammunition. But the shortages are hurting those still living in the area just as much as it is the militants.

“We had to leave the bush because we were hungry,” said Haja Jamil, 40, a pregnant yet painfully thin woman who arrived at the recently liberated city of Bama two weeks ago with two children.

She told Reuters: “Boko Haram kept coming and hassling us. We are still afraid of them.”

Scholarly credentials of the reviver of Kharijism, Abu Muhammed Al-Maqdisi

In his own words,

ia600403.us.archive.org 11 items IslamicBooksByIbnTaymiyyahMaqdisiAndAbdullahAzzam This_is_our_Aqeedah_Al Maqdese.pdf

So he started off with a wish list to study in Madina University (a Wahhabi university of amateurish standards) which should show his already Salafi influence and problematic upbringing.  But he ended up learning secular studies and influenced by youth groups there. He affiliated with “Sheikhs” & students, however it did not satisfy his youthful passion and desires. So he self studied books of Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Abdul Wahhab and discovered what Islam really is. He wrote down a book on this rediscovered Islam and spent the rest of his life giving dawa on it.

For those who don’t know him, this individual is a major reviver of political takfirism among Salafis. Although political takfirism originated from groups like Muslim Brotherhood and Jamat e Islami  (both off shoots of Salafism & Wahhabism), their major branches long mutated and watered down some of that extremism but it was retained among offshoots of these groups. And this individual played a major role in reviving it into mainstream and responsible for formulating the modern day takfiri discourse, manhaj and arguments that we see today espoused by political takfiri groups. He is also known to be major influence on the school dropout and petty criminal Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who orchestrated the Sunni-Shiite civil war in Iraq.  And one of his students whom he gave ijazah (not a joke) and made a mufti of his website, Turki al-Binali, went out to become a major mufti of the splintered Khawarij sect Daesh/ISIS.

We see the prophecy of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) being fulfilled before our eyes:

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, “Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people but rather He takes away knowledge with the death of the scholars until He leaves no scholar behind and the people turn to the ignorant as their leaders. They are asked to give religious judgments without knowledge, thus they are led astray and lead others astray.”  [Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim]

Narrated Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman: The people used to ask Allah’s Apostle about the good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by them. So I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! We were living in ignorance and in an (extremely) worst atmosphere, then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil after this good?” He said, “Yes.” I said, ‘Will there be any good after that evil?” He replied, “Yes, but it will be tainted (not pure.)” I asked, “What will be its taint?” He replied, “(There will be) some people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of their deeds and disapprove of some others.” I asked, “Will there be any evil after that good?” He replied, “Yes, (there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell) Fire, and whoever will respond to their call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire.” I said, “O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them to us?” He said, “They will be from our own people and will speak our language.” I said, “What do you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?” He said, “Stick to the group of Muslims and their Imam.” I said, “If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imam ?” He said, “Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Note that the advice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the above hadith was to stay with the Jamah of Muslims and if not found, then stay away from all groups. Advise was not to join the sect that is more closer to the truth, or a group that apparently seems to be doing some good deeds, or even to gather a group of friends and start a new sect altogether.

They reject the scholars and view people with the Sword: Imam al-Baghawi on the Khawarij

Imam al-Baghawi (d. 516H) in his book “Sharh as-Sunnah” while commenting on the hadith about the Khawarij:

Here he explains the trait mentioned in the hadith about the Khawarij  that they read the Qur’an but “do not go beyond their throats” that it means “Neither accepted nor raised are their good deeds“.

In other words, even if the Khawarij read the Qur’an, pray tahajjud, fast every week, fight their self declared “jihad”, or assume about themselves that “at least they have good intentions and calling to Tawhid and Shariah”, it does not matter in light of the religion that Allah has sent down and their deeds are deemed worthless.

And with regards to the description that the Khawarij “pass through the religion”, Imam al-Baghawi explains that “this attribute of the Khawarij is because they denounce the Imams and view people with the sword”.
